The Rise of the Independents in Ilkley

Ilkley is a spa town in West Yorkshire with a population of around 15,000. Nestling on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and overlooked by the impressive Ilkley Moor, it attracts visitors looking to explore the countryside as well as those who enjoy delving into the vast array of independent shops that Ilkley has to offer.

We celebrated our 10th year in the Ilkley shop last year and in the interim a plethora of businesses has sprung up in the town including fashion and home interior shops Covet, Fig & Willow and Alpine Home Interiors, which stand alongside well-established businesses such as Mortens Hardware (established in 1937) and The Grove Bookshop and Music. Ilkley is also a real foodie hub with independent cafés such as Toast House and cycle café and bike shop The Commute standing head and shoulders above the national chains. Food producers are also well represented with prestigious chocolate and wedding cake maker Poppy Pickering, local greengrocer and florist R K Asquith and award-winning Lishman’s butchers showcasing the finest produce.

Chatting to local people in Ilkley, the one shop they would love to see would be a great deli, so they should be in for a nice surprise with the arrival of Weetons Food Hall from Harrogate. Joining forces with Ramus in our shop on South Hawksworth Street, customers will now be treated to ‘the finest produce from Yorkshire and beyond’.

Not only will there be a selection of local cheeses and charcuterie but a tempting array of freshly made sandwiches, quiches and frittatas, all ready for lunch. Customers will be able to pick up a tasty treat for lunch and order their supper at the same time, to collect on the way home. There will be Weetons Chef To Go ready meals, homemade fish pates, seafood platters and of course the fabulous fresh fish counter.

Watch this space for special offers and competitions to celebrate the launch before Easter!
