It all started on Friday morning with 40 restless lobsters, swiftly followed by the great escape from the Kings Road store on Friday afternoon.  Luckily the good people of Harrogate came to our aid and helped to find and return all 40 lobsters.  Hidden anywhere from Weetons to the Turkish Baths and all along Kings Road, they thankfully made it back safe and sound.

Not only were the fortunate finders rewarded for their efforts with a delicious dressed lobster to take home, but they stayed to sample the bountiful array of tasty nibbles and wine on offer: freshly barbequed halibut, succulent sea bass and marinated prawn kebabs; canapés of tuna tartare, roast salmon pate and smoked salmon and caviar; all perfectly matched with a range of stunning white wines from Ramus’ wine supplier Spen Valley. 


Local MP, Andrew Jones, joined us for the celebrations, indulging his love of seafood by sampling the delicacies on offer.

“Ramus is very much a Harrogate institution, said Andrew, and it was great to be part of their 40th birthday celebrations.  A quick look at Twitter showed how their ‘Find my lobster’ promotion caught the imagination and it was good that many of the popular Kinds Road parade of shops joined in the fun.

The highlight of the day was surely the finding of the ‘Golden Lobster’.  Discovered actually hiding in the shop itself, the lucky winners of the £100 seafood platter were Roy and Sheila Barton, who were thrilled with their catch.

“It’s not every day that a Harrogate business celebrates 40 years, added Ramus MD Jonathan Batchelor, so it was fantastic to enjoy the day with customers old and new”. 

One of Ramus’ aims this year is to encourage people to eat more seafood and try out different types of fish and that definitely worked!  Several children, who claimed to only like salmon, were clamoring for more sea bass and the halibut fillets nearly sold out.

Due to popular demand for more fish recipes, Ramus will be publishing a recipe book later this year to include many of the recipes sampled on Saturday – just in time for Christmas!
