While the current horsemeat scandal has no direct impact on the seafood industry I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of the same corrupt and illegal practices taking place in the production of ever cheaper “fish” meals.
The same questions you are now asking regarding burgers and spagetti bollagnaise could well be asked about frozen fish pies or fish fingers. There is no doubt in my mind that you may not always be getting exactly what it says on the tin, so to speak.
The simple fact is that major retailers have demanded cheaper and cheaper prices from manucturers and the net (excuse the pun) result is that corners are cut. I suspect this will apply to all areas of food production.
The reality is fish costs and the better quality you want the more it costs. There is no secret formula and I would question anything that is too cheap.
The advantage of shopping with an independent fishmonger, like your butcher, is that we are specialists and we know our product. We also supply quality and we can give you sound and honest advice about the products we sell, and whats more we know where they all come from.
I hope the result of this scandal is that more people see the benefits of buying their fish as well as their meat from quality lcoal fishmongers and move away from the supermarkets.
